Sort Shapes by Their Angle Properties

Angle Rules 1 is an educational geometry activity that helps players examine shapes and decide which mathematical rules apply to them. The screen provides a large collection of different polygons and other shapes. Each one has its own combination of corners, angles, symmetry, and diagonals.

The main activity uses two overlapping circles. Players choose two rules and then sort shapes according to those properties. A shape may match the first rule, the second rule, both rules, or neither rule. This makes the activity useful for comparing shapes instead of learning each one separately.

The available rules cover several important geometry ideas. Choices include all angles are congruent, all angles are acute, at least one angle is obtuse, at least one angle is a right angle, and at least one angle is a reflex angle. Congruent angles have equal measures, while an acute angle measures less than 90 degrees.

Angle Rules 1 goes beyond basic angle types. The rule list also contains properties about symmetry and diagonals.

Players can work with statements such as:

  • The figure has no symmetry
  • The figure has rotational symmetry
  • The figure has at least one line of symmetry
  • The figure has no diagonals
  • The figure has at least one diagonal

This gives the activity a wider geometry focus. A player may need to inspect the corners first and then think about how the whole figure behaves.

The large set of shape choices makes comparison important. Two figures may look similar but belong in different parts of the diagram because one has equal angles while the other does not.
