The Cartesian coordinate system is made up of a horizontal line called the x-axis and a vertical line called the y-axis, which intersect at a point called the origin. Each point on the plane can be identified by its distance from the origin along the x-axis and the y-axis. The x-coordinate is the first number in an ordered pair, and the y-coordinate is the second number. The coordinates are always written in the order (x, y).
