About Substitution

Substitution is an algebra practice game where players place given number values into algebraic expressions. The game gives letters such as s, b, t, or n, and each letter has a number value. The player then works out each expression using those values. The Transum version calls it a multi-level, self-marking quiz with levels from 1 to 7.

How the Game Plays

Substitution starts with simple expressions. For example, the game may tell the player that one letter equals 3 and another letter equals 5. Then the player must replace the letters with numbers and solve the expression. This helps the player understand what algebra really means.

The game checks the answer, so the player gets feedback after each try. That makes it useful for practice. The player can move through harder levels as the questions become more challenging. A simple expression may use one letter. A harder one may use more steps or more than one letter.

Why Kids May Enjoy It

Substitution can help children who find algebra confusing. Letters in math can feel strange at first. This game shows that a letter can stand for a number. Once the child knows the number, the expression becomes easier to solve.

The game also trains careful working. The player needs to copy the value correctly, follow the operation, and solve in the right order. A small mistake can change the answer. Substitution works best for learners who already know basic operations and want to start algebra in a simple way.
