Introduction to pH Experiment

The pH scale runs from zero up to fourteen. Readings under seven point to acid. Readings above seven indicate a base. The mark at seven shows neutral water.

You can use red cabbage juice to see these changes in color. Boil fresh purple leaves in water. Strain out the solids. That leaves a clear purple liquid. Add vinegar or lemon juice and watch it turn red. Stir in milk and baking soda next. Finish with ammonia and notice shades of green and blue.

A pH meter shows a number. Slip the probe into a sample. That method removes color guessing. People test pool water or garden soil to keep a balanced pH. These steps show why pH matters.
